My Big Fat Graphic Novel Round-Up

I’ve been reading a LOT of graphic novels recently (it’s my goal this year to read 75) but I haven’t been reviewing them like I review other books. It’s hard for me to talk about graphic novels and their plot sometimes because I am also so influenced by the drawing. I’ve never been a huge comic fan, so I prefer graphic novels drawn in pencil or with less-computerized drawings, and I’ve found some great ones this year! I’ve also come across some great plots. So, here’s a round up of some of the cool graphic novels I’ve read recently and brief, brief thoughts.

As the Crow Flies by Melanie Gillman

Beautiful, beautiful illustrations and a cool story but like…where’s the ending? Where’s the resolution? The rest of the story?

Maker Comics: Bake like a Pro by Falynn Koch

So COOL. So busy on the page, but I learned so much about baking.

Smile by Raina Telgemeir

Well I never want to go to the dentist ever again but I also can’t wait for more by her this fall!

Cat Burglar Black by Richard Sala

I’m so glad I came across this book! What a cool story, and blurbed by Lemony Snicket.

The Tea Dragon Society & Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O’Neill

Wholesome, light fantasy with dragons and tea and trees and beautiful illustrations, plus ASL representation!

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu

Super excited to see where this story goes! Non-binary queer MC!

Will & Whit by Laura Lee Gulledge

Beautiful pencil illustrations and an entrancing story.

Displacement: A Travelogue by Lucy Knisley

A sweet story but also funny and so beautifully drawn

Jane Austen: Her Heart Did Whisper by Manuela Santoni

A strange format for this, but a quick and entertaining read

The Hidden Witch by Molly Knox Ostertag

Love this sequel to the Witch Boy and can’t wait for the third book this November

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeir

I loved this one! So cool.

Apocalypse Taco by Nathan Hale

A wowza-balls crazy story, let me tell you.

What graphic novels do you recommend?
